Month of the Holy Rosary and Christ the King

Dear Friends in Christ,

On July 13, 1917, Our Lady of Fatima told the three shepherd children “to continue to pray the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, in order to obtain peace for the world … because only she can help you.” Three months later, on October 13, she identified herself as “the Lady of the Rosary” and emphasized once more, “Continue always to pray the Rosary every day.”

Some forty years later, during a 1957 interview, Sister Lucia of Fatima (eldest of the three seers) told Fr. Augustin Fuentes, “Look, Father, the Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Holy Rosary. She has given this efficacy to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all, spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families, of the families of the world, or of the religious communities, or even of the life of peoples and nations, that cannot be solved by the Rosary.”

What makes the Rosary so powerful? St. Louis De Montfort (1673-1716) gives us some insight in his classic treatise, The Secret of the Rosary: “Since the Holy Rosary is composed, principally and in substance, of the Prayer of Christ and the Angelic Salutation, that is, the Our Father and the Hail Mary, it is without doubt the first prayer and the first devotion of the faithful and has been in use all through the centuries, from the time of the Apostles and disciples down to the present.”

As De Montfort recounts, Our Lady once told St. Mechtilde (d. 1298) concerning the Hail Mary, “My daughter, I want you to know that no one can please me more than by saying the salutation which the Most Adorable Trinity sent to me and by which He raised me to the dignity of Mother of God.”

Like Our Lady herself, the Holy Rosary is at once both simple and sublime, having a humility which crushes satan’s pride and a unique ability to establish in souls and society at large the Kingdom of Christ – “a Kingdom of truth and life: a Kingdom of holiness and grace: a Kingdom of justice, love, and peace” (Preface for the Feast of Christ the King).
