Yesterday, Kennedy Hall and I did a deep dive on the Vatican’s accusation of schism against Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò. His Grace revealed last week that the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) has accused him of “the crime of schism” and summoned him to appear in Rome (see here for the official decree; here for an English translation). For his part, Archbishop Viganò confirmed that he did not and will not do so.
The Vatican’s charge consists of three main components: “[1] denial of the legitimacy of Pope Francis, [2] rupture of communion with Him, and [3] rejection of the Second Vatican Council.” In light of this, we reviewed multiple key texts from the corpus of His Grace’s public statements and discussed whether or not they qualify as proof of the Vatican’s three-pronged charge. Many of those texts are posted on this website and published in A Voice in the Wilderness (Angelico Press, 2021), an anthology edited and introduced by CFN’s Brian McCall in collaboration with His Grace.
Our discussion is particularly relevant in light of today’s major news: Archbishop Viganò has publicly accused “Jorge Mario Bergoglio of heresy and schism, and I ask that he be judged as a heretic and schismatic and removed from the Throne which he has unworthily occupied for over eleven years.”
