Weekly News Roundup: Acies Ordinata, Impeachment Trial, Roe v. Wade Anniversary, Historic March for Life

In this week’s episode, CFN Editor-in-Chief Brian McCall and Managing Editor Matt Gaspers discuss the following news items:

  • Acies Ordinata — Latest Demonstration
    • Held on January 18 in Munich, Germany, the episcopal see of Cardinal Reinhard Marx.
    • Participants included Professor Roberto de Mattei (Lepanto Foundation), Michael Matt (The Remnant), John-Henry Westen (LifeSiteNews), Alexander Tschugguel (St. Boniface Institute), and … Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò!
  • Trump Impeachment Trial
    • After nearly 30 days of withholding the Articles of Impeachment, US House Speak Nancy Pelosi (D-California) finally had them delivered to the Senate the body vested by the US Constitution with the sole power to try cases of impeachment (Art. I, Sect. 3) on January 15.
    • This week Tuesday (Jan. 21), the trial began with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) introducing rules he asserted were substantially the same as those which governed the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton (1999). This assertion was hotly contested, however, by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and the team of House Managers (members of the House chosen to prosecute the case) led by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California).
    • Opening statements were made by the House Managers and White House defense team, respectively, on January 21, followed by three days (including today) of the House Managers presenting their case against President Trump.
    • Tomorrow (Jan. 25), the White House legal team will begin the presentation of their defense, which is likewise expected to unfold over the course of three days.
    • Longtime and regular CFN contributor Christopher Ferrara offers his analysis and commentary in a new article, “The Impeachment of Christ the King: What’s Really Behind the Sham Impeachment of Donald Trump“. (NB: Neither Mr. Ferrara nor CFN literally equate President Trump with Our Lord Jesus Christ, something which is made clear in the article.)
  • Anniversary of Roe v. Wade and 47th Annual March for Life
  • Pope Appoints New Archbishop of Philadelphia
    • This week, Pope Francis accepted the age-related resignation of Archbishop Charles J. Chaput.
    • The Pope has named Bishop Nelson J. Perez of Cleveland the new Archbishop of Philadelphia.
